چکیده

This paper describes valuation-based systems for representing and solving discrete optimization problems. The information in an optimization problem is represented using variables, sample spaces of variables, a set of values, and func tions that map sample spaces of sets of variables to the set of values. The func tions, called valuations, represent the factors of an objective function. Solving the optimization problem involves using two operations called combination and marginalization. The combination operation tells us how to combine the factors of the objective function to form the global objective function. Marginalization is either maximization or minimization. Solving an optimization problem can be simply described as finding the marginal of the joint objective function for the empty set. We state some simple axioms that combination and marginalization need to satisfy to enable us to solve an optimization problem using local compu tation.

Emergency department resource optimisation for improved performance: a review

Emergency departments (EDs) have been becoming increasingly congested due to the combined impacts of growing demand, access block and increased clinical capability of the EDs. This congestion has known to have adverse impacts on the performance of the healthcare services. Attempts to overcome with this challenge have focussed largely on the demand management and the application of system wide p...

Optimisation of assembly scheduling in VCIM systems using genetic algorithm

Assembly plays an important role in any production system as it constitutes a significant portion of the lead time and cost of a product. Virtual computer-integrated manufacturing (VCIM) system is a modern production system being conceptually developed to extend the application of traditional computer-integrated manufacturing (CIM) system to global level. Assembly scheduling in VCIM systems is ...

Computation in Valuation Algebras

Many different formalisms for treating uncertainty or, more generally, information and knowledge, have a common underlying algebraic structure. The essential algebraic operations are combination, which corresponds to aggregation of knowledge, and marginalization, which corresponds to focusing of knowledge. This structure is called a valuation algebra. Besides managing uncertainty in expert syst...

Using Interval Petri Nets and Timed Automata for Diagnosis of Discrete Event Systems (DES)

A discrete event system (DES) is a dynamic system that evolves in accordance with the abrupt occurrence, at possibly unknown irregular intervals, of physical events. Because of the special nature of these systems, different tools are currently used for their analysis, design and modeling. The main focus of this paper is the presentation of a new modeling approach of Discrete Event Systems. The ...

OPTIMisation using Intelligent Simulation Tools (OPTIMIST)

This paper describes the research project OPTIMIST at the University of Skövde. The project is focused on the development and application of intelligent techniques for simulation-based optimisation of real-world industrial problems. A software environment called OPTIMISE which tightly integrates Discrete-Event Simulation systems with AIbased optimisation is developed within the project.
